As you know, Log Spikes were removed, and that was a bummer. But we all know why they were removed: they made it possible to have a defense, that didn’t require any input or maintenance from the player. You could’ve made a sea of Log Spikes around your base, and forget that horde nights exist.
I would rework Log Spikes in a way that these types of spikes would work “realistically”. Just walking over Log Spikes wouldn’t do any damage. However, if a zombie takes enough damage while walking on top of a Log Spike, it falls down and takes extra damage. Also falling on top of Log Spikes would do some damage.
That way Log Spikes would be useful, but they’d still require an input from the player to work.
